Before the conference in Antwerp I had the great pleasure of visiting three member institutions in Germany: the Abteilung Dokumentation und Archive des Westdeutschen Rundfunk in Köln + the Schumannhaus and the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn. I have very fond memories of the friendly way I was welcomed and how enthusiastically the colleagues showed me their respective library/archive.
I have asked my hosts to write a few lines describing their institution. This is the presentation of Katrin Reinhold, head librarian of the Schumannhaus:
"Schumannhaus Bonn is a little “hot spot” in the musical world of the former German Capital, the City of Bonn. Beethoven was born in Bonn so the City is proud to be “Beethoven-Stadt” now, the Beethovenfest takes place the yearly. But Bonn is moreover the place where Robert Schumann died in a mental hospital at the age of 46 in 1856 in Endenich, which was a small village at that time and now belongs to the City. The House where he died now serves as a Public Music Library and a Schumann- Museum at the same time. The Library offers more than 52.000 books, CDs, DVDs, books of sheet music and music magazines from Gregorian to Amy Winehouse to music lovers from in and around Bonn - and of course there are various reference materials, professional advice, Online catalogue, inter-library loans and concerts, which brings the music of Robert and Clara Schumann and their friends alive. The Bonn Schumann-Festival, which occurs from the end of May until the middle of June offers a facet empire culture program with classical, cabaret and theatre in many Endenich play sites.
