At its recent meeting in Antwerp, the IAML Council and General Assembly has approved the appointment of Jim Cassaro as the in-coming editor of the association's journal, Fontes Artes Musicae. His appointment will begin in January 2015, with his first issue appearing in January 2016. Jim brings to this new role an extensive background in editing, including chief editor of Notes, the quarterly journal of the Music Library Association (2006-2010), compiling and editing two volumes in the MLA Technical Reports series (Planning and Caring for Library Audio Facilities [1989] and Space Utilization in the Music Library [1991]), as well as Music, Libraries, and the Academy: Essays in Honor of Lenore Coral (Middleton, WI: A-R Editions, 2007). In addition, he has also produced a guide to research on Gaetano Donizetti (Gaetano Donizetti: A Research and Information Guide [1st ed., Garland, 2000; 2nd ed., Routledge, 2009]). Jim has published several articles as well in various journals and collections of essays, which have provided him with a solid background in understanding the editorial process, peer-review procedures, and the publishing industry.
Jim has significant background in the electronic mounting and transmission of journals, working closely with the various vendors of the electronic version of Notes (Ebsco, ProQuest, JSTOR, H.W. Wilson, etc.), and has served on selection committees for ProQuest and JSTOR to suggest candidates for new electronic journals. He is highly visible in a number of library and scholarly organizations, including IAML, MLA, the American Musicological Society, and the Society for American Music. Currently Jim is head of the Theodore M. Finney Music Library at the University of Pittsburgh, with a secondary appointment as an assistant professor in the Music Department, and is a member of the graduate faculty.
