IAML Stellenbosch Congress Diary #6: RISM
The 2024 IAML Congress in Stellenbosch, South Africa marked several firsts: the first time a IAML Congress took place on the African continent, the first time so many of our colleagues from Africa could participate in a IAML event, and for many IAML members it was our first time in Africa. In many respects, the congress week was similar to previous IAML congresses in that we had the opportunity to meet with our RISM contributors, hold a RISM cataloging workshop, and host a session dedicated to RISM. What made it stand out was the opportunity to come into conversation with colleagues from South Africa and Africa for the first time and to learn about their collections.

An international conference was held 7-9 October 2022 acknowledging the 70th anniversary of RISM (Répertoire International des Sources Musicales). It was a great honour for me to extend IAML’s warm congratulations in a short speech at the opening session. As the President of IAML, I am very proud of the fact that our Association was one of the two founders of the RISM project in 1952, together with the International Musicological Society (IMS).
A new tutorial for the Plaine & Easie Code is now available from the RISM Editorial Center in cooperation with the U.S. RISM Office at Harvard University. The Plaine & Easie Code is a library standard that is maintained by IAML and by RISM. It corresponds to MARC21 field 031.
