Submitted on behalf of Joseph Hafner:
We are pleased to announce that our application to include Fontes Artis Musicae in Project MUSE was successful. This means that Fontes Artis Musicae will join the Project MUSE Premium Collection beginning with the Volume 63, 2016 issues. At its June meeting, the General Assembly approved a motion allowing the Board to pursue this contract. The contract was reviewed by a lawyer and others who have experience with license agreements, adjusted according to their advice, and then signed.
Project MUSE will provide an online version of our journal with complete functionality and maximum discoverability, including full-text searching on Project MUSE and indexing in Google, which will help increase the journal’s visibility. Project MUSE will take care of the production, technology, marketing, sales, and fee collection. Project MUSE is a non-profit organization. Here is the URL for more information on Project MUSE:https://muse.jhu.edu/
Our participation in Project MUSE is cost-free for IAML, and will provide two kinds of access:
- Subscription access: Institutions worldwide that subscribe to the Project MUSE Premium Collection will have online access to all of the issues of Fontes Artis Musicae starting in 2016 going forward. IAML will receive a royalty based on 70% of the net revenues collected from these subscribers.
- Individual IAML Members access: Individual IAML members will have free access to Fontes Artis Musicae online in 2016 forward via a link on the IAML website.
Who will still receive print copies of Fontes Artis Musicae?
- IAML Institutional Members: Institutional members will continue to receive the print copy of Fontes Artis Musicae as part of their IAML membership.
- Individual IAML Members can choose: Any member who still wishes to receive the print journal can continue doing this.
The revenue from institutional subscriptions will provide needed income to the Association, helping to support the journal and all of IAML’s activities and goals. In addition, a number of members have long asked for electronic-only access to Fontes Artis Musicae, including the most current issues, and Project MUSE answers this request for individual members. If any IAML Institutional Members do not renew their membership with IAML during the first 2 years we are on the new platform, Project MUSE will reimburse IAML for those loss of memberships. Further, once this electronic version is available to members, anyone will be able to opt out of receiving the print version if they choose to, which should save IAML printing and, especially, mailing costs over time.
The agreement is non-exclusive, so IAML will also continue our ongoing agreements with JSTOR, ProQuest, and EBSCO for now.
Once we have more information about how to access the journal through Project MUSE, we will share it with you.
If you have any questions, please contact me or any Board Member or Officer.
