Welcome evening
Welcome evening in Artisten (included in the conference fee) with music, mingle and wine.

Sweden is famous for its choirs. We therefore begin our conference with a brief concert given by the Pro Musica Chamber Choir. This internationally acclaimed choir, with its conductor Jan Yngwe, has toured extensively and made several recordings. The Choir has been especially praised for its interpretation of contemporary music. The concert in Artisten will focus on Swedish music.

The concert will be followed by a bite to eat and a glass of wine to give you a chance to meet new and old friends. A bar will be open and the eminent bar pianist Staffan Biörklund-Jullander will entertain us during the evening.

Monday, June 19, 18.00

Official opening ceremony (included in the conference fee).

The City of Göteborg invites all delegates to a reception at Börsen, (the old stock exchange, the Bourse), situated at Gustav Adolfs torg 4. The house of the stock-exchange was inaugurated in 1849 and was used as a concert hall in the evenings.

The music entertainment will span three thousand years: from bronze lurs to present day bassoons.

Excursions
1. UNESCO Vitlycke Museum - Rock carvings
Departure time: 12.45
This excursion will take us to Tanumshede and the 3000 year old rock carvings from the Swedish Bronze age. The bus ride goes through beautiful Bohuslän with its characteristic rocky coastline before arriving at the Vitlycke Museum and the UNESCO World heritage site in Tanumshede. The Museum won the European Museum of the Year Award in 1999. Lunch on the bus included.

2. Organ tour. An excursion to some of Göteborg's finest pipe organs
Departure time: 12.45

Excursion guide: Paul Peeters

Göteborg's collection of interesting and valuable pipe organs has rapidly developed during the past decade. The excursion includes a visit to Göteborg Organ Art Center organ workshop, a presentation of organ research activities, and demonstrations of the organs in örgryte nya kyrka (the 1999 North German baroque organ and the 1871 Henry Willis organ), two instruments at the Academy of Music and Drama (a 1998 French symphonic organ and the Manderscheidt positive organ from ca. 1650), and the 1783 instrument in Jonsereds kyrka, built by the Swedish builder Pehr Schiörlin. The excursion also includes a visit to an industrial community founded in 1830 by the Scotsman William Gibson in Jonsered.

3. A music-related walking tour of Göteborg
Departure time: 14.00

Excursion guide: Anders Carlsson

In our promenade through the old town we will visit some of the places where Göteborg’s musical life and classical concerts took place in the nineteenth century. The noblest house of all was “Börsen”, the stock-exchange house where the rich merchants did business with each other during the day and visited or even participated in concerts in the evenings. If we are lucky we can also visit the Masonic Temple where Bedrich Smetana gave so many chamber music recitals. Smetana was a resident of Göteborg 1856–61 in a period when the struggle for cultural and political independence in Bohemia was harsh. Of course we will also visit Stora Nygatan where he stayed with his family in the year 1858/59.

We end our walk at the beautiful city-garden Trädgårdsföreningen. The rose-garden will be in full bloom and the Rosenkaféet  will serve us something tasty (included).

4. Boat trip to Elfsborg Fortress
Departure time: 13.15
Elfsborg at the entrance of the harbour dates back to the mid-seventeenth century. It is one of the most popular destinations for a day out on the West Coast, with its thrilling tales of dungeons, battles with the Danes and its tiny hospital. There are legends about the punishment for soldiers who during the early 18 century played cards in the church at the Fortress and about the upper classes chasing greased pigs at the fairground.

5. From Cabin to Castle
Departure time: 14.00
See the contrast between the lifestyles and environments of the simple farmer and the rich lord of the manor. Our journey goes south through areas of natural beauty with forests, meadows and pastures to äskhult. Here we stop to visit the 18th century farming village. From äskhult we continue to Tjolöholm Castle that was built at the end of the 19th century in English Tudor style as a summer residence for the wealthy Dickson family. The castles interiors and furnishings have been preserved in their orginal condition.
