3. A
music-related walking tour of Göteborg
Departure time: 14.00 |
Excursion guide: Anders Carlsson
|
In our promenade through the old town we
will visit some of the places where Göteborg’s musical life
and classical concerts took place in the nineteenth century.
The noblest house of all was “Börsen”, the stock-exchange
house where the rich merchants did business with each other
during the day and visited or even participated in concerts in
the evenings. If we are lucky we can also visit the Masonic
Temple where Bedrich Smetana gave so many chamber music
recitals. Smetana was a resident of Göteborg 1856–61 in a
period when the struggle for cultural and political
independence in Bohemia was harsh. Of course we will also
visit Stora Nygatan where he stayed with his family in
the year 1858/59. |
We end our walk at the beautiful city-garden
Trädgårdsföreningen.
The rose-garden will be in full bloom and the Rosenkaféet
will serve us something tasty (included). |
|
4.
Boat trip to Elfsborg Fortress
Departure time: 13.15 |
Elfsborg
at the entrance of the harbour dates back to the
mid-seventeenth century. It is one of the most popular
destinations for a day out on the West Coast, with its
thrilling tales of dungeons, battles with the Danes and its
tiny hospital. There are legends about the punishment for
soldiers who during the early 18 century played cards in the
church at the Fortress and about the upper classes chasing
greased pigs at the fairground. |
|
5.
From Cabin to Castle
Departure time: 14.00 |
See
the contrast between the lifestyles and environments of the
simple farmer and the rich lord of the manor. Our journey goes
south through areas of natural beauty with forests, meadows
and pastures to äskhult. Here we stop to visit the 18th
century farming village. From äskhult we continue to
Tjolöholm
Castle that was built at the end of the 19th century in
English Tudor style as a summer residence for the wealthy
Dickson family. The castles interiors and furnishings have
been preserved in their orginal condition. |
