We have received the following from Mari Itoh, President of IAML Japan:
We are very sorry that we have to inform you of a piece of sad news. Dr. Hiroko Kishimoto, emeritus professor of the Showa University of Music, passed away on the 9th of October. She earned a Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College after studying at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Her research interests were the Italian madrigal in the Renaissance and singing methods. She was also aware of how vital a music library was. She studied music librarianship at Simmons College and held an M.L.S. from the College.
She was one of the founding members of the IAML Japan branch, founded in 1979, and a committee member of the memorable IAML Tokyo Conference in 1988. She was frequently elected as a board member of our branch. Her last term as a member at large was from 2017 to 2019. She regularly attended annual meetings and was an active speaker at the conferences, too. In addition, she contributed significantly to the music library community in Japan as a member of the classification committee of the Music Library Association of Japan.
She was always calm and made unbiased judgment. On the other side, she was charming enough to collect stuffed sheep which lay in her office. It was a shame that she could not see her latest publication on the history of Western art music issued two weeks ago.
We will all miss a precious colleague and her broad knowledge as well as her international contact. We remember her with warmth and admiration.
