Zusammenfassung:

Performances of Ivan Zajc's heroic national opera Nikola Šubić Zrinjski (1876) and the song that forms the basis for its rousing finale, »U boj,« have extended the work's legacy far beyond European shores. The opera has received three especially significant productions in North America, one in 1929 by the »Zora« Singing Society in Chicago; a second in 1986 in an abbre-viated concert version performed by the Philharmonien Hungarica (a German orchestra), the men of the Munich Chamber Chorus, and the Munich Sängerrunde Choir; and a third in 2002 by Opera Mississauga in the Greater Toronto (Canada) area. On the other side of the world, »U boj« became a standard in the Japanese male choral repertory after a ship carrying members of the Czechoslovak Legion docked in Japan for repairs in 1919, and some of the passengers sang it to members of the Kwansei Gakuin Glee Club, who quickly embraced the song.
