With apologies for the long overdue nature of this announcement:
Roger Flury has been awarded a LIANZA Letter of Recognition for outstanding contribution to music librarianship in New Zealand through his involvement with IAML (International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres) representing 1800 members in fifty-two countries. A member of the New Zealand branch since 1980 he served two terms as President chairing the 1999 international IAML conference in Wellington. Roger served seven years as Secretary General from 2003 and was elected President in 2010 (Moscow), presiding over international conferences in Dublin (2011) and Montreal (2012).
He has presented papers at national and international conferences; co-ordinated RILM abstracts; created a national interloans service for audio-visual materials; developed Cadence & Treasures in Sound; established an Australasian listserv; served on advisory committees and published numerous articles including writing and presenting over 100 programmes for Radio New Zealand. He has had three volumes published in the USA: Pietro Mascagni: A Bio-bibliography (Greenwood Press, 2001); the Songs of Arturo Toscanini (Subito Music, 2010) and Giacomo Puccini: A Discography (Scarecrow Press, 2012). In fact, the Mascagni book was a finalist in the Association of Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) Awards for Excellence.
Roger began his career in London emigrating in 1974 and studied at the University of Canterbury and the New Zealand School of Library Studies. After ten years at Canterbury Public Library and twenty-one years at National Library as team leader Music Services he became the Alexander Turnbull Library Curator, Music in 2011. In 2012 he was invited to join the IAML (UK & Ireland) Music Library Excellence Awards panel in London and has been a preliminary judge for the Mobil and Lexus Song Quests on four occasions.
