Matthias Claudius (1740 – 1815) Matthias Claudius was a German poet who died 200 years ago this month. Many of us know his poem "Der Tod und das Mädchen" (Death and the Maiden) through its musical setting by Franz Schubert. Perhaps less well known outside of Germany is the famous poem "Der Mond ist aufgegangen" (The Moon has Risen). It was set to music and is a standard in German church hymnals. A biography about Claudius was published in 2011 (Annelen Kranefuss: Matthias Claudius. Eine Biographie) and a new one appeared just last year (Martin Geck: Matthias Claudius. Biographie eines Unzeitgemäßen).
