Grove Music Online Update

From Jim Cassaro, IAML representative to the Grove Music Online Advisory Group:

I wanted to share some information about updates and changes to the online site. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Anna-Lise Santella, Editor, Grove Music/Oxford Music at anna-lise.santella@oup.com.

Latest Oxford Music Online site update now live!

Please visit http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com to see what we’ve added:

  • Multimedia links in articles to audio and video recordings and score facsimiles via our partnership with Alexander Street Press’s Music Online.  While there are just a few articles included in this first round, this is a new program that will continue to grow.  If you have any suggestions for articles in particular need of linking or would like to comment on the link display, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
  • 342 new articles from the forthcoming second edition of The Grove Dictionary of American Music, including over 200 new articles on jazz music and musicians, 23 on concert music after 1950, 15 on concert music from 1900-1950, 11 on popular music, 7 on Asian American music, and 7 on gospel music.

  • 26 revised articles submitted through our UpdateGMO author revision program.  Look for increases in our UpdateGMO numbers in 2013 as we start to see the effects of having an editor on this part of the job full time and a particularly successful update invitation campaign this past summer/fall.

As always, I’d greatly appreciate any feedback you have to offer.

In other Grove news:

  • You may also notice a message on the site about the Oxford Index Underbar, which will allow searching across all OUP online products from an unobtrusive tool bar at the bottom of each site page.  It’s coming soon, but not quite ready yet.  I’ll let you know when it goes live so you can test it out.
  • Due to production delays, AmeriGrove 2e’s release date has been moved up to June 13.
  • On a related note, we are looking for additional copy editors for AmeriGrove and, when that project is complete, for the Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments, due out in 2014.  If you know anyone familiar with Grove style and with some past editorial experience who might be interested in freelance work (can be done remotely, pays $25/hour), please let me know.

  • We are looking for a spring intern.  The position is based in New York, is unpaid, and requires the student to get college credit for his/her work.  You can direct any interested applicants to the job posting here.
  • We have been experiencing some technical issues with the site that require is to cancel our planned interim public page updates for the time being.  We are working on a solution and hope to reinstate them shortly.  But unfortunately, there will be no interim update in January as originally planned. I’ll keep you posted as this situation develops. Our next update is currently scheduled for late March.
