EBLIDA condemns yesterday’s gun attack at French weekly satirical newspaper Charlie-Hebdo in Paris and reiterates the importance of freedom of expression and freedom of access to information as core to the functioning of a democratic society.
Yesterday morning, Wednesday 7th January 2015, the French weekly satirical newspaper Charlie-Hebdo based in Paris, suffered a cowardly gun attack, resulting in the deaths of 12 people. EBLIDA would like to express our adherence to and full support of the freedom of expression, freedom of the media and freedom of access to information as core and essential elements for the functioning of a democratic society. EBLIDA is fully supportive of the Vice-President of the EU Commission Andrus ANSIP who tweeted that “attacks on the press are attacks against freedom of speech and culture of debate”.
EBLIDA would like to extend its solidarity and sincere condolences to the families of the victims, their media colleagues and to the people of France.
