Logo for Répertoire International des Bruits MusicalesIAML is pleased to announce the instigation of a new 'R project' of musicology: the Répertoire International des Bruits Musicales (RIBM) / International Repertory of Musical Sounds / Internationales Repertorium der Musikgeraüsche (logo, right). The goal of RIBM is to document all musical sounds throughout the world.

The definition of musical sounds will include musical instruments in the Western and non-Western traditions as well as sounds from one's everyday environment, from animals to technology, from cows in a field to water splashing, toasters falling, ringtones, that Microsoft startup sound, and the chime of a new Facebook like.

The Secretary General has expressed excitement at the prospects for collecting descriptions of such a diverse range of sounds as violin, mbira, milk bottle and dustbin lid. Potential membership is encouraged from all language groups so as to gather the most diverse range of sound descriptions.

Expressions of interest for membership of the new Commission Mixte should be submitted from today 1st April to the following address: IvyBehnHaad@iaml.info
